In the heart of Tasmania, the island state of southern Australia, lies a little-known treasure: the Tasmanian pepper berry. This berry or false pepper contains a small marvel that tantalizes the taste buds and awakens the senses.
The Tasmanian pepper berry, also known as Tasmanian pepper or Aboriginal pepper, comes from the fruit of the Tasmannia lanceolata, a shrub native to this region. This often overlooked plant offers an exceptional flavor and aroma, distinguishing it from all other peppers in the world.
It is a berry with intense and complex aromas. At the start of tasting, it recalls notes of blackberries, blueberries, myrtles, and bay laurel. Then it's a true explosion of heat in the mouth; intense and peppery, this berry ends up developing wild, peppery, and forest floor notes. Abby, based in southern Tasmania, gives us the chance to discover this rare berry.
